Description

Technician, Staking – Electric Division

The purpose of this classification is to design and analyze distribution line extensions for Electric Division projects and systems, utilizing GIS based staking software, or other tasks, as assigned.
(Salary Range $23.23 - $37.17 / hour)

Essential Functions:

  • Designs and analyzes distribution line extensions for small or routine division projects and contributes to the design of larger, more complex projects related to division systems.
  • Creates staking sheets and work orders utilizing GIS based staking software and GPS units for mapping new utility pole runs.
  • Prepares and maintains necessary documentation for permits, joint use facilities, easements, and underground releases.
  • Obtains field data and conducts field checks.
  • Coordinates assigned division projects and programs.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant codes, trends, and technology.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures.
  • Operates a personal computer and other electronic devices.
  • Utilizes maintenance, work order, or department-specific software to issue, receive and complete work orders as required.
  • Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies.
  • Communicates with supervisor, other employees, third party service contractors, customers, the public, and other individuals as needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An associate degree or equivalent from a college or technical school in electrical engineering, electrical technology, or a closely related field is required. This must be supplemented by a minimum of three years of relevant experience, with a strong emphasis on electric utility operations, particularly in distribution staking, line construction, or related engineering disciplines. Experience should include the use of staking software, system mapping, and computer applications for system design and maintenance.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and direct utility experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
  • Must reside within a radius of Orangeburg, SC that allows for a 30-minute maximum response to call outs.

 

Specific License or Certification Required:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License.


Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

  • Candidates must demonstrate a solid understanding of electrical distribution systems, with specific knowledge of RUS design specifications, NESC requirements, national engineering standards, and electric utility construction standards.
  • A background in distribution staking and line construction practices is essential.
  • Familiarity with GIS is preferred.
  • Must be detail-oriented and capable of using computers or tablets to enter, retrieve, and modify data using standard business and utility software applications.
  • The ability to learn and apply City and departmental policies and practices effectively is also required.
