Operators I - IV, Plant – Water Division
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled technical work to operate, control and maintain equipment at the water treatment plant to maintain compliance with applicable local, state, and federal environmental rules and regulations for the Department of Public Utilities. This position requires 12 hour rotating shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays. The level of this operator position will be determined based on the level of skill, experience and certification by the applicant.
Essential Functions
- Operates an assigned water treatment plant.
- Monitors chemical feeds and distribution, flow rates, and related treatment processes.
- Reads meters, gauges and dials.
- Collects and tests water samples.
- Inspects plant systems, facilities and equipment.
- Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures.
- Communicates with supervisor, other employees, and other individuals as needed.
- May be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, holidays, Standby Duty or be called out as needed 24 hours/day 7 days/week to maintain service to customers.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of work experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must reside within a radius of Orangeburg, SC that allows for a 30-minute maximum response to call outs and emergencies.
Specific License or Certification Required
- Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License.
- Must obtain a valid D Level Water Treatment Plant Operator license within 18 months of hire.
- Must obtain a valid C Level Water Treatment Plant Operator license within 30 months of hire.
