Description
SubstationTechnician – Electric Division
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled trades work to maintain and repair electric generators, sub-stations and related equipment for the Electric Division of the Department of Public Utilities.
(Salary Range $23.70 - $37.92 / hour)
Essential Functions:
- Provides complex technical repair service on electric generators, sub-stations and related equipment.
- Performs complex preventative and regularly scheduled maintenance and repairs on electrical equipment.
- Maintains inventory of parts and equipment.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition.
- Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures.
- Operates a personal computer and other electronic devices.
- Utilizes maintenance, work order, or department-specific software to issue, receive and complete work orders as required.
- Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies.
- Communicates with supervisor, other employees, third party service contractors, customers, the public, and other individuals as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by vocational or technical training in mechanical maintenance or a related field; supplemented by five years of progressive experience in maintenance and repair of electric plant equipment and machinery.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and direct utility experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
- Must reside within a radius of Orangeburg, SC that allows for a 30-minute maximum response to call outs.
Specific License or Certification Required:
- Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).
Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
- Candidate must have extensive mechanical knowledge of internal combustion reciprocating engines, combustion turbines, and electro-mechanical systems; a working knowledge of pneumatic and electronic AC and DC control systems.
- The ability to learn and apply City and departmental policies and practices effectively is also required.
